Scientists Just Unlocked an Endless Supply of Cancer-Fighting Cells

An Unexpected Discovery

Cancer immunotherapy works by using the body's own immune system to fight tumors, but one of its biggest limitations has always been supply. Growing enough immune cells to treat patients is expensive, time-consuming, and hard to scale. A new study from USC Stem Cell, published in the journal Cell on June 29, 2026, may have found a solution. Researchers led by Dr. Qi-Long Ying at the Keck School of Medicine discovered that a type of immune cell precursor called granulocyte-monocyte progenitors, or GMPs, can be made to divide indefinitely in a lab while still producing functional immune cells. This challenges a long-standing assumption in biology that only stem cells have the ability to self-renew.

Engineering Cells to Fight Cancer

To make these cells useful against cancer, the team engineered them with a targeting system called a chimeric antigen receptor, or CAR, that tells the immune cell to seek out and attack cancer. They also added a second signal designed to activate nearby immune cells and strengthen the body's natural defenses. When tested in mice with both blood cancers and solid tumors, the engineered GMPs spread throughout the body, continuously produced cancer-fighting immune cells, and slowed tumor progression. Collaborator Dr. Ravi Majeti from Stanford noted that the method opens the door to applications similar to existing T cell therapies, but with a much larger and more renewable supply.

What This Means for Patients

The implications for patients could be significant. Current cell-based cancer therapies like CAR-T are personalized, meaning cells are taken from each individual patient, engineered, and returned. This process is slow and costly. The USC approach points toward a therapy that could be manufactured once and given to many patients, dramatically expanding access. The research is still preclinical, meaning it has only been tested in animals so far, but the early results are promising enough that scientists are already discussing applications in human trials.
