PRISM Project at Ohlone Flea Market

Community Event

PRISM Project @ Ohlone Flea Market

March 28, 2026

On March 14, we went to the grand opening of the 2026 Ohlone Flea Market to raise awareness about the lack of diversity in clinical studies. We met with dozens of members of the community, from college students who have never thought about participating in clinical studies to senior citizens who have taken part in many. Aside from informing them about our research and taking a survey, we heard their stories and perspectives, learning valuable information moving forward with our initiative.

For example, most community members reported that time was the biggest barrier for participating in a clinical study. We then informed them about a few clinical studies that were a monthly or annual commitment, and they then seemed more eager to join one.

We also had the chance to share our initiative with the Mayor, who as a vet doctor himself, recognized the importance of clinical studies and encouraged us to continue with our work. Raising awareness at the flea market and hearing community members truly demonstrated strong community support, as well as the need to accurately inform community members, which will be a key focus moving forward.
