About PRISM
We believe science should reflect all of us
PRISM (Promoting Representation in Science and Medicine) is a community initiative in Fremont, CA dedicated to closing the gap between clinical research and the communities it's meant to serve.
Clinical studies are how we discover new treatments, medications, and approaches to care. But historically, the people who participate in those trials have not looked like most of America, leading to a worsened healthcare experience for the groups not represented.
We're here to change that. Not by pressuring anyone, but by informing, connecting, and building trust within the community.
PRISM serves:
- •Patients & families who want to explore and learn about clinical studies
- •Healthcare providers who want to connect patients with opportunities
- •Researchers who want to reach underrepresented communities
Community First
We start with the people in our neighborhoods, not with data points in a spreadsheet.
Trust Through Honesty
We explain what trials really are in plain language, without making it overly scientific.
You're in Control
Joining a trial is always your choice. We give you information; you make the decision.
Representation Matters
When trials reflect our communities, treatments work better for everyone.

What's a clinical study? A clinical study is a research study where volunteers help test whether a new treatment, medication, or approach is safe and effective. Participating is always voluntary, and you can leave at any time. In addition, some studies offer compensation for your time.
There are two types of clinical studies: observational and interventional.
- •Observational: Researchers collect data by observing participants without assigning a treatment or intervention.
- •Interventional: Researchers assign participants to a treatment or intervention and measure its effects.

Common questions about clinical studies
Diseases affect different populations differently. When studies don't include diverse participants, we end up with treatments designed around a narrow group. This means that these treatments may not work as well, or have different side effects, for everyone else. Your participation helps make medicine better for your whole community.
